Rural house
Location: Newbury, VIC
Type of Build: New Residential Build
Size: 400m²
Rural House, on the fringe of the Wombat State Forest sits boldly within its landscape, a robust and modern interpretation of the traditional barnyard archetype.
The passive, off-grid home consists of four volumes, each capturing reclusive views to encourage a stripped-back way of living. Exposed to inclement weather during the cooler seasons, the weighted and solid buildings are encased in Australian hardwood timbers and metal, conversing with the reds of the Hepburn soil and browns of the native gums, recalibrating a connection with the land. Indoor and outdoor spaces are framed by triple-glazed thermally broken glass.
The main home along with the guest house connected by a footbridge, features four bedrooms, two open-plan living areas with wood fireplaces, and three bathrooms. The indoor seamlessly connects to different types of outdoor spaces with varied outlooks and uses, more integral through a central south courtyard and river spine that runs between the main and guest house. The center of the building's living block is void of gutters allowing the stormwater to catch and filter through the artificial granite creek.
This home redefines functionality, innovation, and efficiency while remaining warm and comforting.
